Governor Mitch Daniels joined executives from Angie's List and Mayor Greg Ballard today to announce the company's plans to expand its Indianapolis headquarters, creating up to 500 new jobs by 2015.
The company, a national provider of consumer reviews on local service companies, will invest $11.5 million to expand its four-city-block campus on Indianapolis' near east side to accommodate the job growth and training of its new employees. Angie's List and its property management partner, Henry Amalgamated, LLC, have invested more than $15 million since 2001 to renovate more than a dozen properties and develop its campus.
Angie's List is more than just a website with a successful start-up story, it's grown into a culture.
The company will also spend $11.5 million to expand its campus on the city's Near East side.
Angie's List is more than just a website with a successful start-up story, it's grown into a culture.
Walk in the front door of the iconic historic firehouse and you'll find a funky, eclectic work environment that includes a state of the art call center that rewards its hottest employees with an unconventional treat. That treat is a sort of cubicle space in the back of an antique fire truck parked in the company’s lobby.
"It's one of the contests that they have in the call center, so if you're the top performer, you get to actually sit in the fire truck," said Angie Hicks, the company’s Co-Founder.
Make no mistake, though, this is a hard-charging bunch.
"We're kind of the people that take your work seriously, but don't take yourself too seriously and I think those kind of attitudes have really helped to create the culture that we have around here," says Hicks.
It's a culture that embraces employee fitness, with a fully equipped weight room and yoga classes to help keep employees centered and low on stress.
Kelsey Taylor has been with the company for four years and said she loves the holistic view.
"We have a garden club, we have a cooking club, free weight watchers, a great smoking cessation program that pays them $1,000 after they're smoke free for one year," she said.
Just as Angie's List is investing in its employees, Indy is investing in the company's future, with millions in promised infrastructure improvements.
