Indianapolis—
In 2010, 122 Indiana workers were killed on the job. Thursday, April 28th, they were remembered at the Indiana Statehouse. The annual Workers' Memorial Day ceremony is put on to honor the victims who died while at work. The Indiana Department of Labor says the men and women came from every corner of the state and were doing dozens of different types of jobs when they were killed."It's important to remember that as we go about our daily lives there are many people, too many people, last year that died while they were at work. They are farm workers, they are university students, they are urban steel workers. They were mowing the grass, they were working on maintenance in facilities, they were test driving vehicles. They fell from cranes and roofs and tractors, they lost their lives in so many different ways," said Lori Torres, the Indiana Dept. of Labor Commissioner.
The event was organized by the AFL-CIO. Union members say the want state lawmakers to adopt stronger laws protecting workers' health and safety.
