Last Thursday a basketball player from FortWwayne died after collapsing during a basketball game. Sunday morning a Chicago Bears defensive lineman died from natural causes brought on by an enlarged heart.

Doctors say some signs of heart disease can be detected during a routine physical. Now one local mother would like to see EKGs become part of a normal sports physical.

"My thoughts that go through my mind if we had a proper physical this wouldn't have happened," said mother Jackie Renfrow.

"You're looking for heart murmurs," explained Dr. Daniel Kraft with Methodist Sports Medicine. "You're looking to make sure that they have pulses in all four extremities that are normal and really that's the main part of the physical exam."

The additional testing would bring added expense to the physical exam, but advocates say it would be worth it.
