This story may have you cutting back on the snacks the next time you head to the theaters. Believe it or not all that extra butter and candy could cause your waistline to grow.

Consumer Reports took a look at the nutrition of popular movie snacks in their latest issue. The largest size buttered popcorn at most movie chains almost reaches 1,600 calories. Cheese nachos top 900 and that diet soda to wash it all down almost 700.

But there are ways to take in the full theater experience without having to cut back on that much.

"Opt for things like plain popcorn. We found that you could save about 20 percent of the fat and calories when you skip the butter. Go for water. It's not as much fun as soda, but your waistline will thank you,” said Consumer Reports Associate Editor Nicole Sarrubbo.

Consumer Reports also suggests eating a meal before you get to the theater so you don't feel tempted to spend big money on big snacks.
