Fifty potential jurors arrived to the courthouse to begin the selection process.
Democrats have argued that White illegally registered to vote at his ex-wife's address in Fishers. However, White claims he had an agreement with his former wife to use her condo as his legal residence before he re-married and bought a new home.
White was indicted in March, accused of fraud, perjury, theft, voting in the wrong precinct, submitting a false voter registration change of address and casting a "false, fictitious or fraudulent ballot."
If convicted on any of the counts, White would be forced to step down from his position as secretary of state.
In December, Marion Circuit Court Judge Louis Rosenberg ruled White was ineligible to hold the office, appointing Democrat Vop Osili in the position. Osili lost to White in the general election.
However, Rosenberg stayed the decision, allowing White to remain as secretary of state until the appeals process is complete.
Monday, Marion County Prosecutor Carl Brizzi, defense attorney for White, questioned potential jurors about their exposure to pre-trial publicity.
“You can read stuff and depending upon how you read things, some people are very critical about what they read,” Brizzi told reporters. “And some people take it as gospel and so, no two people are alike.”
The trial is expected to last for two weeks.
