Indiana charter school advocates hope lawmakers working on a new state budget don't limit the growth of the alternative schools.

A budget passed by the Democrat-led House would give local school boards the authority to reject charter schools in areas that already have many charters, which are public schools free of certain state regulations.

But a budget being considered this week by the GOP-led Senate includes no new charter school regulations. Senate Republicans also want a pilot program for virtual charter schools, where students take most instruction online. Opponents say virtual charter schools are simply home schooling at taxpayer expense.

Lawmakers are working to create a budget before the current one expires June 30.
