Stepmother of 3 Children
My name is Robin Edwards, I have lived in Indianapolis, my entire life. Currently, I live on the far east side of Indianapolis. I work as a Bookkeeper for High Point Oil Company. I'm a stepmom to three children, although, currently, I'm separated from my husband of seven years.
I feel that there should be an age limit imposed on drivers who participate in racing sports that involve motor vehicles. I feel that if you're old enough to possess a driver's license, then you should be allowed to participate; however, if you're not old enough to possess a driver's license, then you should not be allowed to participate. It has been proven that the brain is still developing, and that our reaction times and thought process aren't going to be as sharp when making life & death decisions behind the wheel of a vehicle at a younger age.
Obviously, there are going to be exceptions to the rule, no matter what subject matter is being debated. I realize that there are several professional racers who started out racing at extremely young ages. Until laws dictate a mandate, or rules are changed, ultimately the decision is going to rely on the parents to make the determination for their child, whether or not the child is/isn't prepared to participate. Having said that, I question as to whether or not you were to ask the parents of the young driver who was killed this past weekend if they would change their decision about allowing their son to participate in racing sports at such a young age, aftter the tragedy that occurred. To argue that this child died doing what he loved is ludicrous to me. He's a child who died. It's a tragedy, and a senseless one, at that. I understand that we can all die, at any age, doing nearly anything, but that doesn't mean you just let your children do anything they want because they enjoy it. There still needs to be boundaries imposed.
The same way I feel our government is wrong in allowing our young men & women go fight and die for our country, but they're not of a legal age limit to go into a liquor store or bar to purchase a drink. Either the drinking age needs to be lowered, or the age you enter the military needs to be raised, in my opinion. Again, the boundaries and logic need to be scrutinized more carefully.
