Indiana House Democrats want Hoosiers to decide the fate of a right-to-work bill, not legislators.
House Democratic leader Pat Bauer is calling for a statewide referendum to decide if Indiana should ban union contracts that mandate fees from company employees. He said that since right-to-work was not an issue when lawmakers were chosen in the last election, Hoosiers haven't gotten the chance to voice their opinions on the controversial topic.
Bauer also said some House Republicans feel the same way.
"It's our contention that there are many on the other side that would like the people in and let the sunshine in and vote on that."
House Speaker Brian Bosma said that he will allow a vote on a statewide referendum.
"If a majority feel that this should be sent to the taxpayers or the voters to decide instead of their elected representatives, we'll abide by that and I'm not afraid of the vote.”
However, it's his opinion that state lawmakers should make the decision on right-to-work, not all Hoosiers.
