Governor Mitch Daniels threatened to shut down most of Indiana state government unless the General Assembly completes work on a proposed budget before Tuesday night.
The legislature faces a June 30th deadline to complete its special session to craft a new two-year budget.
Daniels said the lack of a budget deal will result in the closure of state parks, license branches, casinos, horse tracks, the Hoosier Lottery and road construction sites. Indiana State Police will remain on patrol and state prisons will remain open.
House democrats attacked the governor refusing to add more money to funding for education.
"Voting for the (republican) senate's budget means the Indiana House supports closing classrooms and cutting jobs," read a statement from Speaker Pat Bauer (D) South Bend. "I cannot support such a thing."
A shut down of state government would also mean that 33,000 state employees would be furloughed, though unemployed Hoosiers and residents already receiving food stamps would continue to receive their benefits, though no new claims would be filed.
