EVANSTON, Ill. (AP) — Jeremy Nash scored 20 points to lead Northwestern past Northern Illinois 77-55 Friday night in the season opener for both teams.

Northwestern took charge with a 15-1 first-half run to grab a 26-17 edge. Luka Mirkovic scored six points and Nash had five during the spurt.

With 3:04 left in the half, Mike Capocci's alley-oop dunk off a pass from Jeff Ryan brought the crowd to its feet as Northwestern led 34-21 on its way to a 39-25 halftime advantage. But Ryan was carried off the court with a leg injury with 1:28 left in the half and did not return.

Northern Illinois came within eight early in the second half, but Nash scored eight points during an 11-1 surge.

The Huskies were led by Xavier Silas, who scored 18 points before fouling out, while Darion Anderson fouled out with 15 points. Mirkovic scored 14 points for the Wildcats.
