PORTAGE, Ind. (AP) — A northwest Indiana development official says he hopes a 10-mile stretch of recreation trail along Lake Michigan can be built within five years to complete a series of trails connecting Illinois to Michigan.

The final link of the Marquette Trail will connect western and eastern sections of the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore in Porter County and link up with the Calumet Trail in the town of Porter.

When it's finished, it will complete nearly 50 miles of trails across the northwest corner of Indiana that link Illinois to Michigan

The Northwestern Indiana Regional Planning Commission's project manager believes the trail can be done in five years. Nearly $7 million needed for the project could come from grants and other funds flowing through the Northwest Indiana Regional Development Authority.
