All parents think their children are special. But if you ask Jennifer Foltz about her son and special doesn't even begin to cut it.

"I knew he'd be great one day, but my goodness," said Jennifer.

Jennifer spent one night in a hospital bed at Methodist as the result of a vicious beating at the hands -- police say -- of Shean Gilkey, her boyfriend. Police credit her 11 year-old son Austin with saving her life after his courageous 911 call for help and his attempts to keep Gilkey from killing his mother.

"I never wanted him to see that, especially twice in a year is horrible. He's so precious. He's great," said Jennifer.

Thursday night mother and son were back together.

"I was like yes! My mom is home," said an excited Austin.

The two shared some couch time and got re-acquainted, which included Jennifer's cuts, bruises and bite marks.

"Like a week it was like beautiful. I mean, it's still beautiful. It's a whole lot different. I mean that wasn't there, but you're still beautiful, " said Austin to his mom.

"Thank you," responded Jennifer.

Perhaps in this instance, 'thank you's' are not quite enough.

"He's just a really great kid. He's very smart, very intelligent and the way he presented himself, i wouldn't have expected any less of him," explained Jennifer.

"She's even better than I said last time. I mean, like infinity. I can't even show on my hands," said Austin.

At just 11 years-old Austin Mundy has more guts and gumption than many men three times his age and twice his size.

Late Tuesday night Austin's mother and her boyfriend began arguing over money. Austin says Shean Gilkey started to hit his mother and slammed her up against a group of bikes. Her blood can still be seen spattered on the wall from the blow.

"Kinda. I don't really feel like a hero. I just acted with instinct," said Austin Mundy when he was told that he probably saved his mother's life. "I was like, oh my God he's really trying to kill my mom and I was like I better stop him or he's gonna kill her and she's my mom, so, can't let that happen."

The 5th grader picked up the phone and dialed 911, alerting police of what was happening. But this little hero wasn't done yet.

"I started yelling stop and he started choking my mom, so I kinda grabbed his fingers and pulled them back away from my mom's throat and I started kicking them," said Mundy.

Minutes later, police showed up and say Gilkey lunged at them, before he was arrested at gunpoint.

Austin's mother lay bloodied and bruised, but alive, thanks in no small part to her son. A little boy with a big heart, strong will, and a pretty pleased grandmother.

"Very proud, very proud. It's a scary thing wasn't it, seeing something like that go on, so he did real good," said Austin's grandmother, Mildred Gottschalk.

When asked how much he loved his mom, Austin responded "if it was on a scale it would be max and past."

His self proclaimed best friend in the whole wide world, whom he can't wait to hang out with again, as soon as she gets better.

"I'm gonna give her a gigantic hug and I'm gonna say nice to see you mamma, I love you so much," said Mundy.

Twenty-five-year-old Shean Gilkey faces a slew of charges including strangulation and battery. He remains at the Marion County Jail in Indianapolis.
