Speedway, Ind.—
The Indiana Department of Transportation has announced the southbound ramp of Interstate 465 to Crawfordsville Road will close Tuesday at 5:00 a.m. just before the morning rush hour, and will remain closed until May 2011.Crews will be working on the construction of a new flyover ramp in the area for the next 11-12 months. In the meantime, drivers will need to find an alternative route.
The ramp was originally scheduled for closure Monday, June 7th. However, in a press release issued Monday morning, INDOT officials said the closure has been delayed one more day.
This is the latest leg of the Accelerate 465 project, aiming to improve traffic flow and safety on the city's west side.
Officials said the existing cloverleaf loop ramps at I-74/ U.S. 36/Crawfordsville Roads are being replaced by a freeway-to-freeway interchange with higher speed directional flyover ramps. Traffic entering and exiting I-465 at U.S. 136/Crawfordsville Road will use a separate interchange. The new "flyover" design is supposed to eliminate the hazards associated with weaving traffic at the top and bottom of the existing cloverleaf loop ramps.
INDOT said drivers should expect more closures and lane restrictions as this project progresses.
