Accelerate I-465 traffic pattern changes
Motorists should stay alert for Accelerate 465 traffic pattern changes starting overnight Friday, November 13, as crews begin shifting southbound traffic to the newly built outside lanes.

Throughout the weekend, the left lane of southbound I-4 65 from Sam Jones Expressway to I-74 on the west side may be closed as crews move temporary barrier wall and open up the outside lanes. The ramp for West 10th Street to I-465 southbound closes Friday morning while pavement tie-ins are complete. It is expected to reopen Saturday evening.

Once traffic is shifted, the ramp from I-465 to 10th Street is opening up and ends in a signalized intersection. U.S. 40/West Washington Street to southbound I-465 opens at this time as well. Motorists traveling on westbound West Washington Street to southbound I-465 should be prepared to exit from the right lane using the new loop ramp.

Beginning overnight, Friday, November 20, similar restriction happen on northbound I-465 as crews open up those outside lanes. At that time, the ramp from I-465 northbound to U.S. 40/West Washington Street opens. New loop ramps from eastbound West 10th Street and eastbound U.S. 40/West Washington Street to northbound I-465 open on or after Saturday, November 21. Eastbound motorists should expect to exit onto northbound I-465accessing the new loop ramps from the right lane.

As traffic shifts, contractors can prepare to widen and rebuild the inside lanes of I-465. During this time, motorists have access to three narrow lanes in each direction. The project is expected to wrap up in 2011.

As one of the first segments of I-465 ever built, the eleven miles of interstate between West 56th Street and S.R. 67/Kentucky Avenue cannot handle existing traffic volumes at peak periods. Accelerate 465 is a Major Moves corridor project that adds lanes to I-465 and reconfigures interchanges to promote the free-flow movement of traffic. Pedestrian crossings, noise barriers and other improvements benefit nearby residents.

Gov. Mitch Daniels' Major Moves highway program capitalizes on Indiana's strategic location at the Crossroads of America by building a superior road infrastructure. This innovative plan is bringing jobs to the Hoosier State and is leaving a legacy for Indiana to be a global leader in distribution and logistics.
