Indianapolis

It is a new, time-sensitive twist on Ash Wednesday.

For the first time, people were able to get blessings and ashen crosses while on-the-go.

Clerics from Christ Church Cathedral have been out on Monument Circle on Wednesday for the first day of Lent, placing symbolic ashes on the foreheads of people passing by who wanted them.

They said this is not a way to replace a church service, but a way to reach out to others. They said in the midst of a very busy day, it is a reminder of God.

“This is a traditional, liturgical, symbolic act to remind people of their mortality,” said Bishop Cate Waynick. “It reminds of our need to be humble before God, during this Season of Lent to be intentionally self-reflective.”

Everyone is welcome to receive the ashes. Clerics will be at Monument Circle until 5:30 p.m. Wednesday.
