Australian doctor wants to ban baseball cap, claims it contributes to skin cancer

He claims the caps actually contribute to skin cancer by not shading you enough.

The baseball cap is an American icon but one Australian doctor wants to ban it from the beach. He claims the caps actually contribute to skin cancer by not shading you enough.

Dr. Ian McDougall said people think they're protected from the sun just by putting a baseball cap on, but they're really not.

The slogan for battling skin cancer has included the phrase "slip on a hat" for years but McDougall said it just doesn't work.

"Patients come in and they say if only I knew. I'm afraid they did know but they didn't know well enough," said Dr. McDougall.

He said the best way to prevent skin cancer is to simply limit your time in the sun and to reapply sunscreen often, especially on your face and neck.
