Debris believed to have fallen from an overpass, may be to blame for damaging a man's car.
Ronald Barker was driving West on 465, Saturday, around 2:30 in the morning when it happened. "First thing I noticed was the sunroof, when I got out of the car. I heard the crashing glass. I (was) glad the visor was there so none of the glass on the rock fell down on me," Barker explained.
Barker said it happened as he drove near the Allisonville Road overpass. "Sounded like the car was getting crushed -actually," he said. "Large chunks of concrete fell onto my car," he recollected.
Barker still had pieces on his car Saturday afternoon. "I figured in case the insurance wants to see them. Its just this type of concrete," he said. His car was scraped as well.
Two IMPD officers and an ISP officer responded to the area. Barker said he stopped near the Keystone exit. From what FOX 59 has learned, no one can say for sure where the pieces came from. "It definitely fell from the overpass; whether there was concrete from the construction left over or a snow plow hit something and knocked it down," Barker said.
FOX 59 contacted IMPD and ISP. According to IMPD, an officer noticed a fresh layer of snow Saturday morning. IMPD said a snow plow could have kicked the debris up or that it could have come from the bridge. A representative with INDOT said they had not received a call about the incident, as of Saturday afternoon. Both IMPD and ISP told FOX 59, there weren't any red flags about the overpass. INDOT said if there was a problem and they would have been contacted, then a bridge inspector would have checked it out.
While Barker does not know exactly what happened, he hopes it does not happen to someone else. Barker said he plans to take his car to get fixed Monday. He said he is fully covered.
"I was very scared. (I was) kind of trying to swerve (to)avoid whatever was falling," Barker said.
