CARMEL, IN —
Carmel Mayor Jim Brainard will have to look elsewhere for more money to finish the Keystone Parkway roundabout project.A federal committee decided not to give the city any more grant money. State and federal highway departments have already given Carmel $90 million for a project that continues to grow in price. The current estimate to turn six intersections from 96th to 146th street into roundabouts is $112 million dollars.
Meanwhile, Carmel redevelopment leaders say they don't see any problems covering their debt in the future. However, in a meeting Wednesday night, they admit mistakes communicating their financial wellbeing.
The commission has taken out loans to pay for the performing arts center, some of the Carmel City Centre, and the arts and design district.
City leaders say the businesses the improvements bring in create enough tax dollars to pay their debt.
