Charges have been filed against an Indianapolis mother suspected of driving while under the influence of marijuana after an accident killed one of her sons and critically injured the other.
Deishay Scott, 18, has been charged with dealing in marijuana and possession of marijuana. She has also been charged with two felony counts of child restraint system violations.
Scott was heading westbound in the left lane of Interstate 74 in Fountain County Friday. Scott lost control of her vehicle about four miles west of the Waynetown exit. After she left the road, Scott crossed over into the median and then back into the eastbound lanes where she hit another car head-on. Scott's car eventually ended up in a ditch where it rolled onto its passenger side.
Ra-Shawn Kennedy, 3, was killed in the crash. Daeshawn Kennedy, 2, was critically injured. He and two other passengers were taken to the hospital. Police said the toddlers were not in car seats and the passengers were not wearing seat belts.
According to court documents, police cleaning up the accident found a bag inside of Scott's purse containing a green plant material. Police also found 21 individual bags containing what officers believed to be marijuana.
Police said when they went to the hospital to tell Scott her son had died, they detected the smell of burnt marijuana. Scott submitted to a toxicology test and her results are pending.
More charges could follow.
