"I'm very frustrated and feel violated that someone somewhere has got my child's identity and it's scaring me that they know about my child."
Words from a Brownsburg mother whose daughter was the recent victim of child identity theft.
The mother discovered from the Internal Revenue Service that someone used her 8 year old daughter's information on their tax returns.
Even though she says she always protected her daughter's information in the past, her daughter was still victimized.
Fortunately the mother caught it before more damage could be done.
Child identity theft is one of the fastest growing crimes in the nation and police are urging parents to protect their children's future by guarding their identity and credit today.
Police say never carry your or your child's information with you.
Also, make sure you run a credit check on your child from time to time to catch any problems sooner rather than later.
If you think your identity has been compromised file a police report and call the U.S. Federal Trade Commission at 1-877-IDTHEFT.
