Indianapolis—
Tuesday morning, metro police were called to the Oak Crossing Apartment complex on the city's northwest side where a 12-year-old was discovered sleeping in a hallway. The temperature was 43 degrees and according to neighbors, it wasn't the first time the boy had spent the night outside in the cold. The officer who responded to the scene says he found the boy shivering, wearing only shorts and a t-shirt with his arms inside the shirt to keep warm.
When the officer knocked on the door, a 29-year-old woman answered. The woman told the officer she thought her son was at school and had no idea he had been sleeping in the hallway. The officer said the boy seemed very frustrated towards his mother.
Neighbors later told police the woman often put her children, specifically her son, out in the hallway at night. They say it was almost an every day occurance, especially when the woman had male company.
One neighbor told the officer she often invited the boy to her apartment and fed him. Police are still investigating.
