Suspect dies in shootout, injured officer expected to recover
A Metro police officer was shot in his left thigh after a shootout in the parking lot of Carriage House Apartments near 42nd Street and Mitthoeffer Road Monday evening.
Indianapolis
According to an IMPD spokeswoman, the shooting happened following a traffic stop involving three suspects in a red, Chevrolet Impala.
"As the officer exited his vehicle to approach the car that he was pulling over, the driver of that car exited and pulled out a gun and shot at the officer," said Sgt. Linda Jackson.
Officer Dewey Runnels was shot in the left upper thigh and then fired back.
"The officer struck the suspect, killing him," said Jackson.
The suspect's name has not been released pending notification of next to kin.
Runnels was transported to Wishard Hospital. Police said he was awake and breathing.
India Bryant was watching the scene for hours before she realized the suspect was her cousin. She said she immediately broke down in tears.
"He's a good man. He just had a baby," said Bryant. "He would've never shoot at, not the police."
Bryant told Fox59 she can't understand how any of this happened.
"He's so sweet. Everybody who knows him gets along with him and it's just crazy that it's actually him over there," said Bryant. "It just doesn't make any sense."
The two other men inside the Impala were not hurt and were handcuffed and taken in for questioning.
