A south side diner owner fought back when two armed robbers tried to get away with robbing his business early Thursday morning.

Euel Milmoth has been the owner of E.J.'s Diner for the past 11 years. All that time, he said he has carried a .22 magnum pistol in his pocket. He said he felt uneasy Thursday morning when he was opening up for the day around 5 a.m. The lights weren't even on yet when two men came in. One stood by the door, the other approached Euel at the counter.

Euel said his heart was beating a mile a minute. He believed the man may have had a gun.

"One guy came up to the register and said, 'I need some money.' He reached into his pocket for something, and when his hand started to come out... I had my gun cocked... and I shot him," he told Fox59 News.

One of the suspects was hit in the right shoulder. Police searched the area for any possible leads but came up short. They are checking local hospitals for someone matching the description of a gunshot victim, shot in the shoulder. Meanwhile, Euel said the diner would be open all day.
