JD Dorris, 21, was driving his fiance Rachel Gaskins' red Mustang with their one-year-old son, Mason, in the back when he drifted in front of a gravel truck on State Road 252 in Shelby County Tuesday.

"The truck driver was going westbound, the car was coming eastbound. He said the car kept coming over in his lane and he kept getting over as far as he could," said Phil Harrod, a Flatrock Fireman. He was the first responder to the scene.

Police said the truck driver wasn't at fault. He had just left the quarry nearby with a full truck.  Shelby County sheriffs said Dorris crossed the center line. Phil Harrod found him dead.

"I checked the guy who was lying outside the car. He had no pulse and I ran around and a witness said check the baby on the other side," said Harrod.

A witness had taken the baby from the floorboard in the back seat and placed the one-year-old outside the car.

"It had a blanket over it and I pulled the blanket back and saw he was deceased too," said Harrod.

"I saw the police car at Jay's house and I knew it was Rachel," said Tracy Mays.

Tracy said the couple was on their way to visit Jay, Rachel's brother, in Flatrock. The accident happened just about a mile before reaching his house.

Tracy and her husband, John, have known Rachel since she was a little girl. She grew up with their daughter in Flatrock. They also knew her one-year-old son who died.

"He would smile all the time," said Tracy.

"He looked just like her, like his mom Rachel, he had a short time on this earth," said John.

JD Dorris, the driver had several outstanding warrants including driving while suspended with a prior. Tracy said he was known as an impatient driver. For her, there is only one take away from the deadly wreck.

"People need to slow down more take more time and not be in such a hurry all the time," she said. "Cherish your loved ones."
