The images showing the aftermath of an earthquake that hit Haiti left many Hoosiers wanting to lend a helping hand. Now, they have the chance to adopt children from that country.
JHDL Law is holding an open house Wednesday at MLJ Adoptions, 8910 Purdue Road, One College Park, Ste 480 in Indianapolis. Families can learn about adopting Haitian orphans and other children. The even runs from 5:00pm - 8:00pm.
Adoption restrictions are strict.
- One parent must be at least 35 years old
- Couple must be married 10 years or longer
- Single women can adopt as long as they are 30 years old
- Must submit a statement of Christian faith
- Must submit a reference from a pastor
But meeting the guidelines doesn't mean an adoption is guaranteed.
"Haiti is a little bit more unstable. With any country that has really bad poverty levels you're going to find that. And with any country with an unstable government you'll find that," Michele Jackson, an attorney with JHDL said.
She suggests using an agency to help.
Parents, like Shalimar Scott, know first hand how difficult it can be, but she says it's all worth it.
"If it's in your heart, go for it. Your friends and family will support you."
