BLOOMINGTON, IN —
Indiana University police say they now have a suspect in an alleged rape over the weekend. The incident happened Saturday in a house near the Memorial Stadium "red lot".The victim -- who is not a student -- told investigators she became separated from her family and friends after Saturday's IU-Purdue game. She went on to say that the suspect said her friends were at a party at the home on Woodlawn. She says once there, he pulled her down to the basement where he assaulted her.
"Detectives also learned the exact location of the house," said Captain Jerry Minger of the Indiana University Police. "The residents were fully co-operative, letting detectives check the premises. They confirmed a person of interest and we're working to confirm his identity."
The IU student who rented the house where the sexual assault reportedly happened did not want to talk on camera, but off camera he said he was horrified that something like that could have happened in his house, in his basement without his knowledge.
"The area where the incident was reported is by no means a quiet place on game day," explained Minger. "It's practically in the shadow of the stadium. Neighbors we talked with say it's very likely that two people could come in here and never be noticed."
The search for a suspect did not take long. After media reports that included a composite sketch were sent across Central Indiana a Purdue student who said he had information about the incident came forward.
The suspect was described as about 20 years old with medium brown hair styled with a "buzz cut" was wearing a Purdue jacket. After initially saying the suspect was not a Purdue, police are now saying that he was a Purdue student. The suspect wanted for questioning has agreed to talk to detectives.
"The conversation between the detectives and the suspect who is going to be interviewed [Tuesday] was very surface. He didn't go into great detail on the phone it is very difficult to determine exactly who you are speaking with," said Minger.
