A little girl's love of dogs helps protect her entire county. The Vanderburgh County K9 Trax was killed last year. When 8-year old Valerie Shaffer heard about it, she wanted to help.

Shaffer raised about $1,300 on her own. And when other community businesses heard about her efforts they also jumped in to help.

"Honestly, I didn't think the death of my dog was going to bring this much attention,” said Deputy Kevin Hertweck of the Vanderburgh County Sheriff's Office. “It just shows a great support from the community that they reached out, and was able to buy me and the department a new dog, a new partner, that quick."

Deputy Hertweck and his new partner Ollie hit the streets this week on their first patrol.
