A Greenwood man has been killed in a fatal crash on I-475 South in Macon, Georgia on Friday night. His wife and two children were injured.
Authorities told the Fox affiliate in Macon, Georgia, that an 18-wheeler jack-knifed and trapped the Greenwood family's Toyota Camry underneath its trailer. Inside the car was Brent Burns, 30, his wife Melissa, 29, and their two young children, Dylan, 5, Colton, 2.
"It's a devastating thing. It's hard to understand what goes on in life, you know," said Roger Davis, one of the family's neighbors.
The area coroner Leon Jones said Brent Burns died on impact. Officials with the Medical Center of Central Georgia said Melissa Burns is stable, but she was on a ventilator in the ICU Saturday night.
The boys, who were at first in stable condition, have since been released from the hospital.
"I just talked to them the other day, and they were getting ready to leave for Florida," said Judy Schier, another neighbor. "They go every year, and it's to her grandparents in St. Petersburg."
Melissa Burns' mother, Elaine Hock, mentioned the 'horrific accident' on Facebook. She asked for everyone's prayers.
"We got a pond out back here. They'd come through, bring the kids and fish some in the summer time," said Davis.
Davis, who lives across the street from the couple, lead FOX59 behind his home to the pond he was referring to
Saturday that he also said brought smiles and laughter to the Burns family.
"Why? Nobody knows. Nobody will know. It's a part of life which is not always right, and it happens to the good ones it seems like," Davis said.
The cause of the accident is unknown at this time.
