GREENFIELD, Ind. (WXIN) - Robert McNutt, 42, of Richmond, is recovering at Hancock Regional Hospital from dog bites after leading officers from at least five police agencies on a wild chase that ended in a Hancock County soybean field.

A Greenfield police officer first spotted McNutt westbound on I-70 at exit 104 driving a van with a stolen license plate. The van exited onto Mount Comfort Road and for several minutes McNutt led a half-dozen police cars on a chase across several country roads, sideswiping a sheriff's deputy's car and coming to a halt in a beanfield.

McNutt escaped into a nearby woods for 90 minutes before police K-9 units tracked him down.

"We did find out that this guy was considered armed and dangerous," said Greenfield Police Major Derek Towle.

"This was somebody we needed to get off the street."

Towle said McNutt told arresting officers he was afraid of going back to prison as his parole would be violated for a previous cocaine conviction.

He will likely face charges of fleeing, resisting law enforcement, along with traffic violations.
