Greenfield Police Patrolman William Phillips was killed in a hit and run crash around 12:15 a.m. Thursday near the Hancock-Henry County line.
Phillips had just gotten off his shift at 10 p.m. and was doing off-duty night time bicycle training with two other officers.
U.S. 40 in Charlottesville is letting limited traffic through on the eastbound side while Indiana State Police and the Henry County Sheriff's Department investigate. They will be on scene for the majority of the day looking for evidence when it becomes daylight.
Greenfield Police said Phillips was wearing a helmet, reflective clothes and had lights on the bike. This section of U.S. 40 does not have a bike lane.
"We have suffered a great loss. We are trying to keep things normal but it's so hard to have one of your own die," said Greenfield Deputy Chief Derek Towle.
Phillips leaves behind a wife, and two young boys. Officers on scene said he went to Elwood Community High School and graduated in 1996. Phillips is said to have loved Notre Dame football and country music.
Police are looking for either a four door passenger car or an older model van. The vehicle will be dark in color and have front end damage.
Thursday afternoon, 20 police officers escorted the body of Officer Phillips from Ball Memorial Hospital in Muncie back to Greenfield.
