Controversial right-to-work legislation passed the Indiana Senate Monday evening.

Lawmakers voted 28-22 in favor of the legislation which would make it illegal for employers to force non-union members to pay representation fees.

A total of nine Republicans joined Democrats in voting against the controversial legislation.

"Right to Work isn’t about unions,” said House Speaker Brian Bosma (R-Indianapolis). “It is about freedom and economic opportunity. Our number one priority this session is to bring jobs to Indiana and I believe that now is the time for right-to-work in our state.”

Shortly after the vote, House Democrats walked out of the Indiana Statehouse again.

“With an unemployment rate stubbornly hovering around 9 percent we can’t afford to not address this issue this session. We are one step closer to bringing Hoosiers back to work,” said Speaker Bosma.

The measure now moves to the House for a third reading, as long as a quorum of 67 members is present.

If Democrats do not show up for work Tuesday, they will face more fines.
