Friday Mayor Greg Ballard, Congressman Andre Carson, and Transportation Secretary Ray Lahood promoted the "Safe Routes to Schools" program.

They escorted students to Saint Thomas Aquinas School to encourage kids to walk and bike safely to class. Everyday Saint Thomas Aquinas operates two walking school buses, which means bigger groups of students walk to school under the supervision of parent volunteers.

“We walk everyday or we bike and we didn't do it in an organized fashion until end of last year and this year. It's a great way to start the day,” said Carmen Stickel, mother of one the students.
