The Salvation Army was still $241,000 short of its $3.4 million Tree of Lights Campaign Goal Monday.

The nonprofit is urging the public to make their final donations before the Jan. 31 deadline. It says the shortfall represents nearly 106,000 meals or about 10,000 nights of safe shelter.

"With the increases we’re seeing in request for services, we simply can’t afford to fall short of our goal," said Major John Turner, Indiana Commaneder for The Salvation Army.

Last year, the nonprofit helped mor than 2,300 people struggling with substance abuse, provided 96,000 nights of shelter for victims fleeing domestic abuse and homelessness, served more than 2.1 million meals and provided after school programs for area children.
