The Marion County Prosecutor’s Office announced charges of theft and forgery against an Indianapolis attorney and accountant Thursday.
Stacy Sheedy was charged with three counts of theft and one count of forgery.
The prosecutor’s office said investigators discovered $596,000 in unaccounted for funds from a guardianship account and a family trust account, which Sheedy was responsible for.
According to court documents, investigators found several unauthorized transfers and withdrawals from a guardianship account that supported an elderly widow who was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. Investigators said they also discovered checks Sheedy wrote to herself and her business. The funds taken totaled over $172,000. Sheedy took over as the guardian for the account in June 2010, and within two months, the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office said Sheedy made at least 32 unauthorized withdrawals.
In addition to the guardian account, investigators began investigating Sheedy’s role as a trustee of a family trust. The Marion County Prosecutor’s Office said a brokerage account within the trust was valued at $501,000 when Sheedy became trustee, but now has a current value of $168. It is alleged that Sheedy made unauthorized withdrawals from the trust account of $412,500.
“Stacy Sheedy failed not just her profession, she also failed the people for whom she had a fiduciary and ethical obligation to protect,” said Marion County Prosecutor Terry Curry in a news release statement. “This type of theft is unconscionable, and we simply will not tolerate it. We look forward to vigorously prosecuting this case to its conclusion.”
