Indianapolis—
A special deputy with the Marion County Sheriff's Department said he witnessed a 17-year-old student punch a Wayne Township teacher while he was on duty at Sanders School. It happened in the school cafeteria on Tuesday around 12:15 p.m.The deputy says the student used a closed, clenched fist when he hit the teacher. The teacher was left with swelling and redness on his lower left chin and upper right cheek. The teacher also complained of pain in his right ear from when he hit the floor.
The teacher claims he was picking up a folder on the floor, not knowing who it belonged to. That's when he says the student approached him and told the teacher he would be sorry if he didn't give the folder back. The teacher says the student spoke in a rude, loud and angry tone. The deputy says it was then when he saw the student strike his teacher, knocking him to the floor.
The student was placed in handcuffs. The arrest caused a commotion in the school cafeteria, where the incident took place. The student was taken to juvenile detention. He faces charges of battery, disorderly conduct and intimidation.
