An IUPUI Survey Research Center poll indicates the majority of Marion County residents support a comprehensive smoking ban.
More than 600 adults in Marion County were surveyed for the poll. More than two-thirds of them said they would support an ordinance that prohibited smoking in all workplaces, including bars, private clubs and bowling alleys. Those establishments are exempt under the current ban.
In the poll, 87 percent of the people surveyed agreed Marion County workers should be protected from secondhand smoke in the workplace, and approximately 43 percent said, with or without a broader smoking ban, their habits of going out would not change.
"There's like one and a half million people in Marion County," said Scott Seach, general manager of Beech Grove Bowl. "Nowhere is that even close to accurate representation of the city."
Beech Grove Bowl is one of the few bowling alleys in Marion County that doesn't restrict smoking.
The smoking ban survey was commissioned by the American Cancer Society and Indiana Tobacco Prevention and Cessation.
