Walmart donates $400K to local food pantries

A $400,000 gift from Walmart will help feed stock local food banks. The company gave the generous donation Tuesday to the group, "Feeding Indiana's Hungry."

The charity helps keep nearly a dozen food banks throughout the state stocked with supplies. Last year, those food banks gave roughly 50 million lbs. of food to 700,000 hungry Hoosiers. The people in need are not just the state's poorest residents, according to Emily Weikert Bryant, executive director for Feeding Indiana's Hungry.

"Just because you may have the money to pay off your mortgage, pay your car payments, pay everything else but at the end of the month food may not be something you have the extra resources for," said Weikert Bryant.

Of the 700,000 Hoosiers helped last year, the organization says half were senior citizens and children.
