The Miami and London-based Carnival Cruise Line is the flagship brand of Carnival Corp., one of the largest vacation/travel conglomerates in the world with $11.8 billion in revenue and net income of $2.3 billion. The parent company operates 84 ships through 12 cruise lines that also include Holland America Line, Princess Cruises, Seabourn Cruise Line in North America; P&O Cruises, Cunard Line and Ocean Village in the United Kingdom; AIDA in Germany; Costa Cruises in southern Europe, and P&O Cruises in Australia. The Carnival Cruise Line brand alone visits 60 ports in the Bahamas, Caribbean, the Mexican Riviera, Alaska, Hawaii, New England, Canada, Bermuda, Europe and the Greek Isles. Nearly 2 million passengers depart each year from Fort Lauderdale, Miami, Port Canaveral, Tampa, Jacksonville, Galveston, San Diego, Rome, New York, Vancouver, Anchorage, San Juan, New Orleans, Mobile and Long Beach, Calif. The company was founded in 1972 by the late Florida entrepreneur Ted Arison as a subsidiary of a Boston firm. It initially had a single secondhand ship, the TSS Mardi Gras, and just enough fuel to make a one-way trip from Miami to San Juan. It ran aground on a sandbar on its initial voyage. In 1974, Arison bought full ownership of the ailing company for $1 in cash and the assumption of $5 million in debt. The company began aggressive marketing with the slogan "Fun Ships" in part to camouflage the second-hand nature of its fleet. But the company grew steadily until it went public in 1987. Its current CEO and board chairman is Mickey Arison, son of the founder. In recent years, the Fun Ships advertising has given way to ads that spotlight upgraded features such as elegant food and dining, entertainment, on-board activities, shore excursions and in-cabin amenities. Like their competitors, Carnival has been struggling with rising fuel prices, travelers' concerns about hurricanes and changing customer preferences such as a cooling market for Caribbean cruises but an upsurge in the demand for European destinations. But the operation continues to grow with pending orders for 21 more ships for all its lines -- four ships worth $8 billion just for Carnival Cruise Lines. While the new ships are larger than their predecessors, the company has avoided until recently buying the giant-sized ships ordered by its main competitor, Royal Caribbean, which is also based in Miami. Carnival ran into rough seas after Hurricane Katrina when members of Congress and the public questioned the Department of Homeland Security spending $192 million to charter three Carnival ships as temporary housing for victims and relief workers. A department inspector general later deemed the deal "reasonable." The company headquarters is at 3655 N.W. 87th Avenue, Miami. It's phone number is 305/599-2600.
