A building inspector ordered numerous outdoor balconies at a Lafayette apartment complex closed after one collapsed and injured two people.
The balcony at the Crosspoint Apartments pulled away from the building Wednesday afternoon as 21-year-old Aaron Ryse and 16-year-old Joshua Perry were handling a set of weights while helping a friend move into the unit. They fell about nine feet and were taken to a hospital for treatment of leg injuries.
Lafayette building inspector David Redmon says the wooden balcony appeared to be attached to the building by nails and was supported by two wooden posts that were not anchored into the ground. He says such balconies should be secured with lag screws or bolts.
Redmon said the apartment management company will need to submit plans for fixing the structures.
