A revolutionary car seat is about to hit the market...and the breakthrough technology is made right here in Central Indiana.

Dorel Industries partnered with Kettering University to test the impact of side collisions and develop a car seat to protect children.

"Over the past couple of decades for all occupants, side impact fatalities have increased by 20 percent, " said David Amirault of Dorel Juvenile Group.

The new safety device produced at the Columbus plant.. releases air upon contact.. providing a soft cushion blow.

The U.S. Highway Safety Administration is reportedly in the process of finalizing a side-impact safety standard for child seats this year.

Dorel's safety 1st complete air car seat is a convertible seat expected to hit the market by the end of August.

An infant seat is also being made.. and may be available by the end of the year.
