A Sheridan man faced every pilot's worst nightmare Wednesday afternoon above Hamilton County.

His plane's engine stopped nowhere near the ground or the airport that was 7 miles away.

Veteran pilot Jeff Apple says an orange windsock he quickly noticed near Cyntheanne Road East of I-69 helped save his life.

"For some reason that caught my eye," Apple said.

The windsock is left over from a landing strip that used to be on property owned by Tim Lawson's family.

Lawson heard the engine sputter overhead and watched Apple spiral slowly to the ground to make a picturesque landing.

"We went over to him immediately and told him what a nice landing it was," Lawson told FOX 59.

Apple, a veteran pilot, was flying the 1946 Aeronca Champ from Greenfield to Sheridan when his engine stopped.
