All 8 employees then evacuated the building before firefighters arrived. Upon arrival the crew from IFD Engine 42 found fire and smoke showing from the two story steel fabricated building. 8 minutes later they called for a 2nd alarm.

Firefighters initially went offensive with their attack trying to get ahead of the all ready raging fire. Plywood flooring, common attic space and corrugated metal roofing made work difficult for them to get it under control. Within minutes of the 2nd alarm sounding, command made the decision to pull all firefighters out of the building and go defensive.

Almost simultaneously a firefighter who got separated from his crew inside the building called a Mayday. The Rapid Intervention Team (RIT) was deployed and the firefighter was located immediately. IFD Standard Operating Procedure states that any firefighter should call a mayday when in a real or perceived threat of danger. Fortunately this firefighter was not injured and reunited with his crew.

Firefighters from the Indianapolis Fire Department, Beech Grove and Franklin Township worked for almost two hours on this fire before bringing it under control. Unable to locate more than 2 hydrants in the area (they found 3 but one was not working) firefighters had 9 Engines and 7 Ladders throwing water.

Additional units included 3 Medic Trucks, 1 Squad, 1 TSU, 1 Rehab Support Unit and Command Vehicles.

In addition, the MECA van was brought in for command staff to use in running the incident.

The owner of the building Pete Butler arrived on the scene shortly after he was notified but his only concern was that the employees were all safe. Mr. Butler stated that his company provided temporary staffing for other businesses.

4 IFD firefighters were slightly injured in this fire and 2 were transported to Methodist Hospital; one for overheating and the other for a small laceration above his left eye. The other two firefighters were treated at the scene for heat. No civilian injuries.

For one of the 8 employees, today was her first day on the job at MS Inspection and Logistics. She arrived at 8:00 am and was watching the "employee" Safety Video when the fire broke out.

IFD/IMPD fire investigation units were called to the scene and are making the cause and origin determination. According to IFD Chief Greg Thompson damage estimate is $500,000 which includes a tour bus located inside the building.
