Indianapolis —
Postal worker Bob Norman had already found a woman who died of natural causes on his route July 2nd, but he would later find the day's drama was far from over.Norman made a routine stop to a Chase bank branch on Indianapolis' Southeast side later in the afternoon and walked in on a bank robbery. The 54-year-old from Franklin was able to sneak out of the bank's front door and call 911.
He then headed to a back door to get a good look at the getaway car.
"I went around the corner and we were face to face. He was in my face. He was bringing the gun up and I grabbed the pistol with my hand and he shot me in the face. I just grabbed my face and dropped my phone and fell on the ground," Norman said Saturday afternoon at Methodist Hospital.
The man accused of the hold up, Brook Abebe, ran away and was later taken into custody.
Norman's face is badly swollen, he has 8 facial fractures, his eye for now appears to be ok, and the bullet that hit him is lodged in his neck. Doctors say the bullet will be a permanent souvenir of sorts.
"I really thought I was going to die. That's why I had to call my wife and tell her that I loved her," Norman told reporters.
Norman will have a surgery that will leave him with a jaw that's wired shut for 6 to 8 weeks.
