For the first time since January of 2007, Richmond police are investigating a killing in their eastern Indiana city.

Jorge Fonseca, 82, was found beaten on the street outside his Southside home early on the morning of June 19th.

"The last we knew it was about one o'clock in the morning," said Lt. Brad Berner of Richmond P.D. "He went to McDonald's and got himself a cup of coffee. Looks like he pulled up beside his house and got out of his car and he was attacked."

Fonseca suffered a fractured skull. His wallet was missing.

"We could've expected dad going down in a car accident or passing away in his sleep, but to be done this way is just totally uncalled for," said Georgia Fonseca, one of Jorge's seven children as she stood in the front yard of his home, just a few feet a way from a large wooden cross that had been erected to mark the spot where the widower died. "He didn't deserve this and they took away something very precious and you can't put a price on it."

Richmond police investigators said the killing of Jorge Fonseca is not similar to any other recent crimes though their city has experienced a rising heroin and crack problem and many criminals escape back over the Ohio/Indiana border to avoid detection.
